Unit Overview

This course is for teachers, educators and support staff working within an education and care setting within childcare and schools, who are required to respond to a first aid emergency, including asthmatic and anaphylactic emergencies.

This course is approved by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) and satisfies all the requirements for first aid, anaphylaxis management and emergency asthma training under the 136 regulation of the Education and Care Services National Law (2011).

The Workshop Covers the Following...

Locating and interpreting workplace policies and procedures

Conducting a verbal
secondary survey.

Demonstrating safe manual
handling techniques

Assessing airway, breathing and responsiveness of casualty

Following prompts of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED)

Conducting a hazard assessment and identifying strategies to minimise risk

Performing at least four minutes of uninterrupted CPR on an infant, a child and an adult resuscitation manikin placed on the floor, demonstrating the learned techniques

Applying first aid procedures for the following:
allergic reactions, anaphylaxis, asthma, basic wound care, severe bleeding, burns, cardiac arrest, choking and airway obstruction, convulsions, including febrile convulsions, envenomation (using pressure immobilisation), epilepsy and seizures, fractures, sprains and strains (using arm slings, roller bandages or other appropriate immobilisation techniques), head injuries, poisoning, respiratory distress, shock, and stroke

Entry Requirements

  • Please be aware that in order to make an accurate verbal report to the supervisor and the emergency response services as well as provide written incident reports, adequate language skills are required and assessed.

  • Participants will need to participate in physical tasks and will be required to kneel on the floor to allow assessment as stipulated by the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC). Participants will need to wear appropriate attire to allow movement on the floor. 

Workshop Delivery & Assessment

Pre-assessment

Classroom

Prior to classroom attendance, participants will be required to complete a pre-assessment.

This will be submitted prior to your classroom session and assessed as “Satisfactory”. Approximately, 10-14 hours of pre-reading and assessment time is required.

5 hours

(Maximum class size of 12 persons per workshop)

Completion

On successful completion of this course, participants will then receive a Statement of Attainment within 10 business days.

Validity / Refreshers

The Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) recommends this course to be renewed every 3 years from the date of issue. However, the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) also stipulates that to maintain this level of competency that you are required to update the Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation CPR (HLTAID009) component of the course on an annual basis.
